Excessively Worked?

You may be winding down from a long work week or gearing up for weekend work. In any case, here is an opportunity to compare your work load to that of people in other countries.

The International Labor Organization just released an international study work hours that concluded that 1 in 5 workers worldwide works "excessive hours." What's "excessive"? More than 48 hours per week.

Here are percents in some developing countries of workers that work more than 48 hours per week:

Peru 50.9%
Korea 49.5%
Thailand 46.7%
Pakistan 44.4% *

Here are percents in developed countries of workers that work more than 48 hours per week:

United Kingdom 25.7%
Israel 25.5%
Australia 20.4%
Switzerland 19.2%
United States 18.1%

Compare the United States with 18.1% of workers working more than 48 hours per week to Peru with 50.9% of workers working more than 48 hours per week. Yikes. Those are some long work weeks in Peru.

There are lots of policy implications from this work, but mainly they include reducing long work hours and adopting family-friendly work options. We've heard this before.

Read the summary at the summary or the longer version from Internationl Labor Organization.
*I don't see China anywhere, which leads me to believe that they didn't survey every country. I'm ordering a copy of the report to read more.
