I like stories in which people have more than one career, interest, or hobby. Novelist A. L. Kennedy explains why she does stand-up comedy:
Why did I get into comedy? I lost a friend who made me laugh and who loved comedy. And when I needed to cheer myself up after he'd gone, I realised that most of my collection of Funny Things just reminded me of absences and the tendency of all Good Things to pass away.
I also realised that I'd spent my whole life using comedy at least once a day to get me through. I wasn't a going concern without it. So I started to sit up at night when I couldn't sleep and build my own. Finally, I asked a club called the Stand to let me gig and they said yes.
